Design work for new Shin Hanul units put on hold
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has suspended design work for the planned units 3 and 4 at the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant until South Korea's new government announces its policy on the construction of new reactors. During his presidential election campaign, Moon Jae-in said he would scrap plans for new reactors.

Swiss voters approve gradual nuclear phase out
Switzerland voted in a referendum yesterdayÌýto approve a revision to the country's energy policy that promotes the use of renewable energy sources and energy conservation. The revised Federal Energy Act also prohibits the construction of new nuclear power plants.

UK parties make scant reference to nuclear power
The manifestos of the three leading political parties in the UK contain few direct references to nuclear power. The documents were published this week as part of Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat campaigning ahead of the general election on 8 June. Their campaigns have been dominated by the prospect of two years of Brexit talks with the European Union.

National Grid puts Moorside plans on hold
The UK's National Grid said today it has "paused" plans for grid infrastructure work needed for the Moorside nuclear power plant whilst developer NuGeneration conducts a strategic review of the project. National Grid unveiled proposals last October for a £2.8 billion ($3.4 billion) project to connect the planned plant in West Cumbria to the country's electricity network, ahead of ten weeks of consultation it completed in early January.

NIA sets out six priorities for Euratom exit
The UK government needs to work closely with industry to bring about replacement arrangements for theÌýEuropean Atomic Energy Community in a timely manner for the country's nuclear industry, the Nuclear Industry Association says in a position paper published today. The NIA represents more than 260 companies including nuclear power station operators, new build developers and vendors, those engaged in decommissioning, waste management, all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, supply chain and consultancy companies.

South African court sets aside nuclear plans
South Africa's Western Cape High Court has set aside two ministerial determinations underpinning the country's nuclear procurement plans, ruling them unlawful and unconstitutional. The court has also declared the same to be the case of intergovernmental agreements, including that between South Africa and Russia.

Russia aims to align CIS nuclear laws
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree on aligning nuclear power legislation in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In a statement on Medvedev's official website on 22 April, the government said national laws in some countries of the CIS vary in relation to the civilian nuclear energy industry and the construction of nuclear power facilities.

EU signs nuclear safety agreement with Iran
The European Commission announced yesterday it has signed the first-ever project for nuclear safety cooperation with Iran, under the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreed between Iran and the E3/EU+3 countries in July 2015. The project is the first of a €5.0 million ($5.4 million) action approved by the European Union in 2016 under the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation. A second project for the stress test at the Bushehr nuclear power plant is to be signed in the coming weeks.
